QNX is around a long time, but for real-time and embedded solutions still popular as it's a smaller footprint than Linux and Linux frankly is rubbish for true Real-time/Embedded applications. (Try doing accurate sub millisecond timing without a Real Time version of kernel).

Research In Motion is buying QNX Software, with the intention of
pushing the embedded OS into cars and using it for a new generation of
"intelligent peripherals".

RIM already has an OS for its mobile phones, but QNX has some
architectural advantages as well as a foothold in the in-car
entertainment business, which RIM would like to play in. So, regulatory
approval permitting, RIM will become the owner of QNX in the next 45
days.

Our best experience of QNX was its single-disk
demonstration
: a 1.4MB image packing a multitasking OS, web browser,
notepad and graphics demonstrations, proving that a desktop OS didn't
need to be huge and resource hungry.

It's typically used in low level storage controllers, industrial controllers and embedded CPUs on PCI cards.

It's a superior design of kernel for many embedded applications than Linux, being "microkernel" like Minix and original concept for NT.

I wonder how much RIM will charge for it? It's ideal for the new $4 and up Cortex M0 and M3 family

In recent news RIM is also jumping on the Tablet bandwagon. Their new Tablet will be called the "Blackpad"

It's alleged that it will run QNX rather than the Phone OS RIM uses on Blackberries. QNX is renowned as an excellent Embedded Operating system. but any GUI I have seen was rudimentary as many QNX applications have no user interface at all or just a basic control panel.

[Update: Apparently it's the called the "PlayBook".]

It seems that although RIM has just released Version 6 of BlackBerry OS, that they intend to use QNX for their handsets too.

Not bad success for QNX, an OS more used on Industrial, Storage controllers and other embedded applications.

Or is RIM's Blackberry OS particularly poor?
